The global new shipbuilding market in 2025 continues the wave of green transformation, with the proportion of alternative fuel vessel orders in the first two months reaching a record high. China's shipbuilding industry occupies a leading position in the green ship field, undertaking 73.2% of the world's alternative fuel new ship orders in February, and continuing to consolidate its position as the "leader" in the global shipbuilding industry.
In the first two months of this year, a total of 123 new ships with a total tonnage of 6.8 million tons were ordered globally. Among them, as many as 70 ships with a total tonnage of 5.1 million tons were alternative fuel vessels, accounting for 75.2%, exceeding the 48.4% for the whole of last year, and also higher than the record-breaking 54.3% for the whole of 2022. In terms of order value, the total investment in new shipbuilding in the first two months reached 13.8 billion USD. The order value of alternative fuel vessels was 9.8 billion USD (approximately 71.13 billion RMB), a year-on-year decrease of 48%, accounting for 71.5%.
This year's alternative fuel vessel orders include 38 LNG-powered vessels with a total tonnage of 4.5 million tons, 7 methanol-powered vessels with a total tonnage of 400,000 tons, and 27 battery/hybrid propulsion vessels with a total tonnage of 200,000 tons.
